Joe Casely-Hayford’s career has a history which reflects the progress of modern British menswear, starting from a formal background at the Tailor & Cutter Academy before entering Saint Martin’s School of Art to study fashion design, and finally completing a History of Art course at the ICA. Joe’s signature has always combined innovation with tradition – both feeding off each other in equal measure.
From the early eighties Joe styled and designed the stage clothing for many seminal bands such as The Clash and U2 whilst simultaneously working on his eponymous brand for men and women. His wide and varied career has included being the first designer to collaborate with Top Shop in 1993. He has written several articles for leading publications such as Senken Shimbun, The Face, i-D, Arena Homme Plus and the Independent newspaper.
Joe’s educational work has encompassed two years as External Examiner at Bristol’s Fashion School (1989-1991), and visiting lecturer at Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem, Holland (1991-1993). He was head of the judging panel for the annual Smirnoff International Fashion Awards - judging the finals in Amsterdam, San Paolo, Cape-Town, Dublin and Toronto (1992-1996).
For three productive years from 2005-2008 Joe Casely-Hayford was Creative Director of Gieves & Hawkes, during which time he contributed to the re-positioning of the 200 year old Savile Row house. In January 2006 his new Gieves collection was launched on the runway in Paris for Men’s Fashion Week, creating a precedent for a heritage Savile Row brand, and credited as a major step in bringing the illustrious company into the 21st century.
Joe Casely-Hayford was appointed an OBE - Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the fashion industry, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, published on 16 June 2007.
Amongst his recent consultancy projects Joe worked with Sir Terence Conran and partners on the new ‘Boundary/Albion’ boutique hotel and restaurant development which opened in Shoreditch in January 2009.
Charlie Casely-Hayford, joined his father to form Casely-Hayford at the age of 22, having already made his mark on the creative scene in London and abroad. After short stints at i-D magazine, Creative Review and the White Cube gallery, Hoxton, Charlie studied fine art in Florence, attended Saint Martins, and read a degree in History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Throughout his late teens Charlie undertook an intensive apprenticeship in his father’s studio, where he studied design, menswear history, and technical skills.
Sharing the same Gemini Birthday, Joe and Charlie joined forces in 2008 to develop the unique ‘father & son’ design partnership, with the aim of making a new style statement based on English sartorialism and British anarchy. The first collection launched in the Spring/Summer 2009 season.
